Realistic route planning

Isle of Skye itineraries that leave room to enjoy it.

Distances look short on a map, but single-track roads, photo stops and weather all add time. These routes deliberately avoid cramming in everything.

One day: Portree and Trotternish

  1. Start early at the Old Man of Storr, or choose Brothers’ Point for a quieter walk.
  2. Continue north to Kilt Rock and around the Trotternish peninsula.
  3. Choose Quiraing or Fairy Glen—trying to walk both can make the day rushed.
  4. Return to Portree for the harbour, coffee or dinner.

Two days: add the Cuillin and west

Use day one for Trotternish. On day two, head towards Sligachan and Glenbrittle. Visit the Fairy Pools early, then choose Carbost, Talisker Bay or a booked distillery tour. Do not combine this with Neist Point unless you are comfortable with a long driving day.

Three days: slow down and go farther

Use the third day for Dunvegan, Waternish and a quieter stop such as Trumpan Church. Alternatively, explore Sleat in the south and stop at Lean To Coffee near Ashaig. This extra day also gives you flexibility to move a major walk around the weather.

If the weather changes

Swap exposed walks for Dunvegan Castle, Skyeskyns, Talisker Distillery or a relaxed Portree day. Keep your route flexible rather than forcing a viewpoint in poor visibility.

Driving realityA Skye itinerary should be organised by area, not by a list of famous names. The road to a place can take much longer than its mileage suggests.
