Trotternish · Isle of Skye

A practical guide to the Old Man of Storr walk.

Skye’s famous rock pinnacle deserves time, suitable footwear and an early start.

When to arrive

The Storr is one of Skye’s busiest locations, and the car park can fill by mid-morning in summer. Before 9am is a sensible target; after 5pm can be quieter when weather and daylight allow.

What to expect

The main path climbs steadily towards the rock formations. Higher sections are steeper and rockier, and conditions can become slippery. Wear footwear with grip, carry waterproof layers and turn back if visibility or wind makes the route uncomfortable.

Parking and transport

The main car park sits beside the A855 north of Portree and has toilets. Parking is charged. A bus from Portree may also be an option; always check the current timetable before relying on it.

A quieter alternative

If the car park is full or you want a less crowded coastal walk, consider Brothers’ Point farther north near Culnaknock. Rubha Hunish is another quieter option for a longer day at the top of Trotternish.
