Made in Portree

A practical local guide to Portree.

Where to eat, drink coffee, enjoy the harbour and sort the practical details before exploring the rest of Skye.

Our favourite places to eat and drink

Caledonian Cafe

A reliable, no-fuss breakfast or lunch on Wentworth Street and a personal local favourite. It gets busy at peak times, but we think it is worth the wait.

The Granary

Breakfast and lunch in Portree, coffee and some of Portree’s limited outdoor seating, right on Somerled Square. It is also home to the luggage-storage service on this website.

Cuchullin

A Scottish and seafood restaurant on Somerled Square with an in-house baker. It normally operates on a walk-in basis and queues are common in the evening. Opening is seasonal, so check before visiting.

More good options

Birch on Bayfield Road is a dedicated coffee stop, Sea Breezes serves seafood by the harbour, and Lean To Coffee near Ashaig is worth remembering for a day south of Portree.

What to do in town

Walk down to the colourful harbour, browse local shops and look back across Portree Bay. In wet weather, build a slower visit around cafés; much of the harbour frontage can be enjoyed close to shelter.

Before you leave Portree

Fill up with fuel before a full day in the north or west, check your route and book destination restaurants in advance during busy periods. Fuel, food and services become more spread out away from the main town.

Travelling with luggage? The Granary’s luggage storage lets you explore Portree before check-in or after check-out without carrying your bags.
